Flea Allergy Dermatitis
A hypersensitivity reaction to flea saliva in which even a single bite can trigger significant itching in allergic pets.
Overview
Flea allergy dermatitis is one of the most common causes of itchy skin disease in dogs and cats. Unlike a typical flea infestation, allergic pets react intensely to the proteins in flea saliva, so even minimal flea exposure can cause a significant flare.
Clinical signs
- Intense itching, especially over the tail base, rump, and back legs in dogs
- In cats: small, crusty bumps (miliary dermatitis) or excessive grooming/overgrooming
- Hair loss and secondary skin infections from self-trauma
Diagnosis
- Clinical presentation combined with finding fleas or flea dirt on the coat, though allergic pets may groom away all visible evidence
- Intradermal flea antigen testing, available but not commonly needed for a working diagnosis
Treatment
- Strict, consistent, year-round flea prevention for every pet in the household
- Environmental flea treatment when there is an active infestation
- Managing secondary skin infections and itching during flare-ups
Prognosis
Excellent with consistent, year-round flea prevention. Signs are very likely to recur if prevention lapses, even briefly.

Frequently asked questions
My pet is on flea prevention but still itchy - could it still be fleas?
It is possible if prevention has lapsed even briefly, or if the product isn't fully effective for that pet. It is also worth discussing with your vet, since other allergies (environmental or food) can look similar and may need a separate workup.
Why does my pet react so badly to just one flea bite?
In flea-allergic pets, the immune system overreacts to proteins in flea saliva, so a single bite can trigger a disproportionate, intensely itchy reaction compared to a non-allergic pet.
