Frequently asked questions
At what temperature should I stop walking my dog?
Above 28 °C (82 °F) is high risk for any dog and outdoor exercise should be brief and at the coolest part of day. Brachycephalic breeds should not exercise outdoors above ~24 °C (75 °F) - they have minimal capacity to dissipate heat by panting.
Why does humidity matter?
Dogs cool themselves by evaporative panting. High humidity dramatically reduces evaporation efficiency, so a 28 °C / 50% RH day is much safer than a 28 °C / 90% RH day even though the thermometer reads the same.
What about pavement temperature?
Asphalt typically runs 15-25 °C hotter than ambient air. A safe rule: place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds - if you can't hold it there, it's too hot for paws.
